Introduction to The Richards Trauma Process

The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP) is a therapeutic approach designed to address trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Developed by Judith Richards in the early 2010s,

It has since gained recognition for its innovative approach to trauma therapy, combining elements of hypnosis, guided self-reflection, and deep imagination to help individuals reprocess traumatic memories without re-traumatisation.

TRTP combines elements of various therapeutic modalities with the latest scientific findings on trauma’s effects on the brain, particularly the hippocampus.

Brief History

Judith Richards developed TRTP following her personal struggle with trauma. Drawing on the research of trauma experts like Dr. Peter Levine and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Richards created a process that integrates  elements  of hypnosis, guided self-reflection, and deep imagination. The goal is to help individuals reprocess traumatic memories without re-traumatisation.

Development

TRTP was developed to address the limitations of traditional trauma therapies, which often involve prolonged exposure to traumatic memories. Instead, TRTP uses a gentle approach that engages the imagination to stimulate the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for processing and storing memories. By doing so, it helps to “unfreeze” the hippocampus, allowing traumatic memories to be refiled into narrative memory, thus reducing their emotional impact.

Potential Benefits

Rapid Results – TRTP typically requires only three double sessions, making it a quick and efficient method for trauma resolution.

Non-Retraumatising -The process is designed to avoid re-traumatising the client, which is a significant advantage over some traditional therapies.

Wide Applicability -TRTP has shown effectiveness in treating a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and phobias.

Empowerment – Clients often report a sense of empowerment and relief from the “fight or flight” response, leading to improved overall well-being.

TRTP represents a significant advancement in trauma therapy, offering a safe, effective, and efficient way to help individuals heal from past distressing events.
