What is a Counsellor?

A counsellor is a trained professional who is in essence a skilled listener. Counsellors do not give give specific advice or information, rather they create an relationship with the client based upon trust, emotional safety and non-judgement where the client can explore their current difficulties and possible ways forward to resolution. Counsellors provide support to clients by helping them see difficulties more clearly, helping with change or reducing confusion.

Professional training for counsellors varies however a good indicator of the quality of a counsellor’s training and professional practice is their membership with a professional body such as the Australian Counselling Association(ACA). Membership with ACA ensures that the counsellor meets high standard of professionalism including participation in ongoing professional development and clinical supervision activities. Additionally they must also strictly adhere to a set of clear professional ethics in their practice.
